Looking up a component based on its id in the backing bean.

Hey,

I was wondering, is there a way to look up a UIComponent directly by its id in the backing bean? As it is now I have references to some components, and parse my way to components lower in the hierarchy, but if there is some kind of function like mentioned above it would make my code a lot neater. Does anyone know?

Hi Lars-Remi,

Yes, it's possible: http://www.ermalaev.spb.ru/javaee/5/docs/api/javax/faces/component/UIComponent.html. There are methods findComponent(java.lang.String) and invokeOnComponent(javax.faces.context.FacesContext, java.lang.String, javax.faces.component.ContextCallback). As starting point you can use FacesContext.getViewRoot(), model bound component; or obtain component instance from some sort of FacesEvent, e.g. ActionEvent.
