It's not that I doubt your skills but if I can download AS 7.0.0.Final, complete with documentation on June 1, 2011 (my interpretation of "end of spring"), you can send me one of those red hats and I will send a picture of me eating it that you can post on your front page with the caption "Sorry, I didn't believe" ;-)

This aforementioned fear of slipping is one of the things that make me desire at least the one 6.1 release.

I can keep track of the bets for you guys, if you want. Who's next?  :-)

Could you send me some information on the texture of the hat so I can pick out a nice red wine to go with it? In the unlikely event I'll have to do it, I'll consider it taking one for the team, getting AS 7 would be worth it ;-)

Ok, if Redhat doesn't want to support community releases (just EAP versions) it's fine by me. It's their decision.

But I don't like that they are closing open JIRA's for JBoss 6 (Example: https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBAS-8698).

Shouldn't they be left open for the community to fix? If they do it will be possible for the community to _PERHAPS_ release

a 6.1 version more easily, or at least provide a good place to discuss solution for the problems.

FYI,  I just re-opened the JIRA and attached a patch for JBoss Community 5.1.

Well, since the release date for 7.0.0.Final has been removed from the jira-page (previously set to 31/May) you might not need the hat (i.e depending on how to interpret the removal)

It's still OSS, all of the code is available. The only difference is that you need a paid subscription to get binary images/updates. You can also get a no cost trial subscription.

Jason, do you have a link for the OSS community explaning how to build these EAP binaries?

                  You're welcome

7.0.0 final is only a few months away (planned release is end of spring).  Do you still feel you need another release before then?

I have to admit that this 'news' does changes things. Maybe I hadn't been looking at the right places, but I had very little idea that it was this soon. The few tidbits that I did pickup about AS7 was that it was going to be a complete rewrite from scratch. Remembering that 'only' rewriting the microcontainer for AS5 took nearly 3 years, I figured AS7 might still be a year or two away.

Nevertheless, AS7 will be another 1.0 release, as is the current AS6 version. Even though AS6 might not have been the major architectural rewrite, it did come with a couple of modules that were completely new, like JMS (HornetQ). This required completely new configuration files and a lot of extra testing.

Maybe it wasn't the smartest thing of me to do, but the way I sold AS6 to management is to start with the migration and then report any problems found to JBoss. Then when we were about to go live with our newly migrated version, AS6.1 would be there and the most glaring bugs would have been fixed. I continuously monitored the issue tracker, and all that time JBoss AS 6.1 seemed to be relatively on track for the March release. When a number of issues remained outstanding midst of March I guessed the release would maybe be postponed to April and some issues moved forward, but I'd never have guessed it would be cancelled altogether and on such short notice.

I guess we could wait on JBoss AS 7 (delaying our release with a few months), but then we might be in the same boat. We again would like to test with AS7 as soon as possible, report problems, and then go live with a 7.1. But management and some other developers are now greatly against that, as they fear the same might happen again. Just as we have migrated the code base to AS7, it will be announced that there will be no AS7.1 and we'll have to wait 'only a few months' for AS8, which will again be a major rewrite but also again be a 1.0 version.

This is not necessarily how I think things will be going, but this is what I have to defend against. It's seemingly the signal this situation has been sending.

Had this been clear from the outset, I might have chosen not to do the intermediate migration to AS 6, but wait for AS 7, migrate to that, report bugs, go live with a AS 7.1 and then pitch upgrading to EAP to management so we're able to receive further updates easily and in a timely fashion.

This pretty much sums up my timeline, too. I had a dream that ICEfaces 2, Seam 3 and JBoss AS 6.1 would pretty much have stabilized during spring to one great harmonized packaged and I would just lean back and enjoy ;-)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am going to discuss this with the AS7 team and will get back to you on the outcome of 6.1. In the meantime please "vote" for issues that are most important to you that are assigned to 6.1. I currently see one that has 13 votes.

We did that because our thinking was that we would keep releasing CRs if they uncovered any kind of show stopper. So the last CR release will be the Final release. The good news is that spring still has a few more days

I don't expect Nick to eat his hat if we make our date. Although I once won a public bet around JAX-WS in 2006, that resulted in someone eating their words (literally)

Sorry Nick that local pastry shop that just opened decided to build a new pastry shop down the road (after all who is going to buy last years pastries..). The new shop ain't ready yet and the just opened up one isn't quite up to making tasty pastries (some people in the shop just never seem to leave the queue if their transaction fails...). Mind eating half-cooked dough for the next few months...?

                                  Hi,

That said, AS is still open for the community to take it where they like. If someone wants to step up and continue 6, we would certainly provide assitance.

My employer is willing to allow me to spend 50% of my time working on JBoss AS 6.x related tasks - possibly also another colleague could participate. This could include coordinating the releases of JBoss AS 6.x and working on fixing issues that our community has chosen.

As a suggestion, this work could involve setting target release dates after prioritizing the issues most requested by our community and taking care of release management. This will of course require participation of other members of our community.

Let me know if this is something that would be of interest.

                                  Regards,

I just noticed that Duke Nukem Forever is scheduled for release on June 10, 2011 (internationally) so I'm prepered to extend my hat-eating bet just to honor both epic releases! :-D
