Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am going to discuss this with the AS7 team and will get back to you on the outcome of 6.1. In the meantime please "vote" for issues that are most important to you that are assigned to 6.1. I currently see one that has 13 votes.

After considering everyone's feedback, we have decided to do a 6.1 release. The release will be feature boxed, so will happen once all of the issues assigned to it are closed. You can help it along by contributing patches.

Also, we have split the JBAS jira project into two projects, the original JBAS, and AS7. This is to help facilitate community lead development on any release of your choosing. As part of that I have reopened all AS 4,5, and 6 issues that were previously closed which are a year or less in age. Older issues can be reopened if desired. After we release 6.1, additional releases can still be done, but only if someone is willing to contribute their time to make it happen. Future major releases will follow a similar strategy. We will create a new project and leave the older ones open for contribution.

          Hi,

That said, AS is still open for the community to take it where they like. If someone wants to step up and continue 6, we would certainly provide assitance.

My employer is willing to allow me to spend 50% of my time working on JBoss AS 6.x related tasks - possibly also another colleague could participate. This could include coordinating the releases of JBoss AS 6.x and working on fixing issues that our community has chosen.

As a suggestion, this work could involve setting target release dates after prioritizing the issues most requested by our community and taking care of release management. This will of course require participation of other members of our community.

Let me know if this is something that would be of interest.

          Regards,

          /Daniel

          Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the interest/offer! Please contact me via email (jason.greene at redhat dot com) and we can discuss how to get this setup.

This is very good news indeed! Thanks to all of you at JBoss for putting this on the radar!

I do like to grab the opportunity to highlight one patch that has been supplied by a community member that I think has not been applied yet: it's the one here: https://issues.jboss.org/browse/HORNETQ-496

I've tested this locally for some time and have not yet found any problems with it.

Is there a list or category of bugs somewhere that are possible candidates for contributed patches? Some JIRA issues seems to be about things that are quite hard to contribute a simple patch for, as they seemingly require intricate knowledge about some of the JBoss AS internals. Others like the HornetQ patch are much easier for "outsiders", since it concerns a very local problem.

There already are some issues marked with "Fix version" for 6.1.0, which can be picked up by community. However, going forward, there will be issues marked as "Open for Community" in JIRA and can be picked up by community. This needs a bit of JIRA cleanup currently and will be done in the days to come. Also, the JIRA policy mentioned here http://community.jboss.org/wiki/JIRAPolicy will be strictly followed going forward.

Two weeks to go for AS7 CR1 (23/may) and just 3 weeks for AS7 GA (according to his own interpretation of "end of spring"), or at most 6 weeks (till the Summer Solstice).

Is Nicklas going to eat the hat or not? Is Duke going to play any role here? The tension slowly builds...

I expected to see AS7 CR1 available to download today, but instead I see new date - 15/Jun/11. Also I don't see anything about AS7 GA but 24/Aug/11 is scheduled for AS7.1 Alpha1... Looks like things are not that optimistic?

Based on it just can send "Greetings" to Nicklas

Mind you that this is a bet I would more than loved to have lost (well, the deadline is not over yet...). But we can all chip in and start tossing those old deployments at the new AS and report bugs (it's even dead simple to check out and  build yourself with git and maven). More bug reports will of course lead to more delays but there is no point in sticking your head in the sand.

AS7.0 CR1 will be promoted to Final, if everything turns out to be fine.

I know that, that's why I quoted "Greetings", so I didn't mean it serious but ironic...

Well, the deadline is definitely over now and the last released version at this point is beta 3. This means there's still a CR to be released and only thereafter a possible GA.

I think we can safely say that Nicklas doesn't have to eat his hat and JBoss has lost this bet

Well there sure is a "release spirit" on the IRC channel so I expect a CR-release within a few days. My guesstimate is that once it is released into the wild and people start throwing deployments at it, there will probably be a JIRA flood that will take 2-3 weeks to clear of the critical ones (hopefully not many that reveal architechtual weaknesses) so I would say Final at beginning of August and Final-Final (the one we put in production) around September ;-)

But in the end - if AS 7 delivers (and I think it will), who will remember if it was a month or two late?

Well, it thus became July, 12

I tried to test it, but unfortunately nothing from our entire portfolio of apps appears to run on it. This was to be expected, as we heavily depend on resources embedded inside the ear. But apparently, this time around JBoss AS 7 actually doesn't (fully) implement the full Java EE profile, instead of implementing it but just not certifying it as in AS 6. Since most all our apps very intensively use message driven beans and JMS, this is also a hurdle for me to test with our existing code.

True, I mean, who these days still remembers AS 5 was a little late?
