Running JBoss 6.1 Snapshots in Eclipse

Hi all,

I've been using JBoss AS 6.0.0.Final for a while now but I've run into a couple of the more serious bugs recently. I've downloaded the latest 6.1 snapshot to see if the issues are resolved but I can't start the server inside Eclipse. There's no error displayed, it says it's started but there's no console output. It runs fine outside the IDE.

I'm using Eclipse Helios 3.6.1 with JBoss Tools 3.2.0. There's no 6.1 server definition so I'm using the 6.0 one instead. The following warning is displayed when I create the runtime:

This server type expects a version of 6.0 but the server directory is of version 6.1.0-SNAPSHOT.

I didn't think this would prevent it from starting unless the directory structure has changed between 6.0 and 6.1.

Any idea why it's not working?

How can I create a working 6.1 server definition?

I don't use Eclispe with JBoss AS. So I won't be of much help. But, are you able to access the server once it says it's started? Are you just missing logs in the Eclipse console? Are there logs in the server's boot.log and server.log?

Good suggestion, I thought it might just be an Eclipse console thing as well but I can't access the server and nothing is being written to the boot/server logs.

I'm making some headway...

I noticed that 6.1 includes a logging.configuration VM argument. I've added this argument to the launch configuration and I'm now getting some console output. Not looking great though, I'm getting the following exception when starting the server:

you have to open the launch configuration. double click on the server and then under "General information" - "Open launch configuration". then append the following parameter to the "vm arguments":

-Dlogging.configuration=file:"C:/JavaLibraries/jboss-6.1.0-SNAPSHOT/bin/logging.properties"

change the path C:/JavaLibraries/jboss-6.1.0-SNAPSHOT to your path.

this works for me...

Just for the records: I have created a Eclipse Web Tools Platform plugin bugreport to inform them about this new argument. But as the newest available WTP server runtime is "5.0", they will probably not add this.

Sorry, I never used the JBoss Tools - good olde WTP JBoss plugin is sufficient for me ;-). So I cannot provide even bugreports for them...

But maybe I should take a look at them one day...

I think you'll like them - they should definitely be *way* faster than any generic server adapter that uses Ant to package up deployments plus we support the full notion of WTP dependencies which I don't believe the generic ones do.
