getSession returns null if jsessionid part of path params

Greetings.

We are using JBoss AS 6.1.0, and having difficulty supporting a browser with cookies disabled.  When we call encodeRedirectURL() on the response, it correctly adds jsessionid to the query path parameters for the redirect.  But when that request is received, calling request.getSession() always returns null.   The same code works fine under Tomcat.

Is there some setting I need to change to get JBoss to recognize sessions in the URL?

I can provide more information.  It works fine when the redirect is from the Java servlet code.  It fails only when the request originates from an ajax call (using gwt).  In that case, the jsessionid gets put into the params correctly, but notice that "requestedSessionId" is empty.  Here is some log output, after turning on the <Valve className="org.apache.catalina.valves.RequestDumperValve" /> in jbossweb.sar/server.xml:
