Daniel, I think it's pretty obvious that you can not use Seam if you separate the web-tier and the business-tier.Why?! You can use Seam in the business tier and in the web tier and use some mechanism to communicate e.g. JMS, remote session beans, REST (easy to use with Seam through restlet).
Yes, this isn't the way most people use Seam, or the way the examples are written, but it certainly works!
