If so, try also putting <h:outputText value="#{uiComponent['some_table'].rowCount}"/> in the dataTable.

Is it possible that you have to do something like?
<h:outputText value="#{uiComponent['parent_container:some_table'].rowCount}"/>
just a guess.Probably not as the actual id of the UIComponent is set to what the id is defined as, or generated as. It is possible the lookup function takes into account the id of the parent, but most likely not.
