Unfortunatly I don't have the answer to your question but I've got a similar problem ...
I've done some tests in standalone mode with Emebbeded beta2 and SNAPSHOT beta3 and I cannot get any log messages from Hibernate.
I've tried several log4j configurations ... anyway no message is generated from the org.hibernate category.
It's very strange, I've never encountered this kind of situation. Generating Hibernate log messages works normally with Embeddable EJB3 and JBoss AS 4 (I haven't tested with JBoss AS 5). According to my tests, it doesn't seem to be a log4j problem. ...
