is your field private ?, because if you extend it, the field is no longer visible. Hibernate can handle private fields directly, but I think not in a sub-class. Try to make its visibility protected.

as far as I know Hibernate handles a defined field directly so it should beaccesible

do the simple test and make it a
normal
entity. If that works with extended classes, the @Version won't work with the MappedSuperclass.Leo
