I have same problem, I develop by eclipse and jboss5.1 it have very slow every time in debuge mode, I develop with jboss4.2.3 have to faster.
Now,Issue I want to change from jboss4.2.3 to Jboss5.1 for develop but It's to slow on debug.
2 Week, I search answer of Why debug mode to slow?
Please aswer me.

I think new version of jboss slow,becuase EJB Compeonent. to used less EJB Component.
