Aborting a workitem does not abort the execution branch

What exactly is the workitemmanager.abortworkitem() supposed to do? In my scenario, I have a chain of activities act1->act2->act3. If I call workitemmanager.abortworkitem on an item then that item is skipped but the rest of the workflow still seems to be executing i.e. if act2 says abortworkitem then act3 is still executed.

This was a bit unexpected for me so would appreciate if someone could explain the reasoning..

Try changing the independent flag on the call activity sub process property to false. Defaul is true which will not call abort on the sub processes.

Thanks Lakshmi. Unfortunately there is no sub process here. This is all happening within the main process.

Can you upload your process and work item handler where you are  using workItemManager.abortWorkItem

I am curious to see why its not stopping.

It is expected behavior that when aborting a work item it will just quit the one that is currently active and will go on with the rest of the process. As it refers only to a work item rather than the process instance. Of course if you would like to abort completely process instance when aborting a work item it is still possible but you need to implement such logic in your work item handler.

Thanks Maciej. I figured the same.

To implement the logic in the workitemhandler I am grabbing hold of the knowledgesession inside the handler and then calling abortProcessInstance with the processinstanceid.
