Can you tell the number of paged messages in a destination?

When we have paging set up, and enough messages in a topic to cause paging to be used, the JMX console seems to return only the number of messages in the journal/RAM (both for the messageCount attribute and the messageCount method).

We can tell that more messages are paged because the paging directory grows in size roughly proportionally to the number of messages added, but it doesn't seem to shrink while messages are depaged and consumed.

Is there any way to get even a rough indication of the number of messages in the paging directory?

Not currently but there is a JIRA issue for that feature: https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/HORNETQ-31.

In the trunk (after 2.0.beta5), it is also possible to know the size (in bytes, not the number of messages) of the pages for a given address. If you know the average size of your message, it could give you an estimate on the number of paged messages: https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/HORNETQ-174

That's great news - I think the total message size should be enough for our needs.
