If some one could throw light on the pros and cons of both it would be great.....

On one hand you have a proper DB with all the func you could expect :
_ Transaction definition / Roll-back
_ Cursor
_ Tiggers
_ etc ...
Postgres is really a heavy weight thing !


MySQL is almost as good & probably faster in READS (& slower on complex WRITES).

mySQL is a piece of shit, and does nothing but piss me off. The only db worse then mySQL is Oracle (because of non-compliant sql not performance).

Use postgresql, you will be happy.

any experiences with SAP DB compared to mySQL or postgeSQL ?

i use SAP DB mainly, because it was very easy to install and provides some nice utilities like its's Database Manager and it's SQL Studio Gui Tools.
I also found the detailed doc very helpfull.
when you go to the sap knowledge shop, they even send you a CD-ROM containing the the whole stuff for free.
