clustered TimerService?

Hi.

while looking for a clustered implementation of a timer service (with failover and invocation distribution) i came across a post describing exatly what im looking for: https://community.jboss.org/message/649723#649723

i also spotted the following issue which seems like a prerequisite for this functionality: https://issues.jboss.org/browse/AS7-1534

so what im asking is - is this possible in current (7.1.1) jboss ?

if so - how, if not when (in terms of versions, jira issues, deadlines :-) ...) ?

are they any ways to work around this? (like use a clustered-via-db quartz scheduler through JCA)

There is an open JIRA AS7-3962 which you can watch and vote for it (more votes might force the implementation)

I write a quickstart how to use the SingletonService and add an example for a Scheduler that is a Clusterwide Singleton, see here.

The code is available via github here https://github.com/wfink/quickstart/tree/cluster-ha-singleton-ejb/cluster-ha-singleton-ejb.

The example works as long as the cluster is stable, a re-join will end in two active Singletons, I'm still investigating.

Quartz is not recommended to use, it is replaced by EJB3 @Schedule

apart from quartz overlapping some core functionality in EJB3, is there any real reason why its not recommended ?

on paper it does clustering and timer expiration distribution, and plays nice with jboss 7 as a RA - http://www.mastertheboss.com/jboss-quartz/quartz-2-tutorial-on-jboss-as-7

my next alternative would be to implement the scheduler as a cluster singleton service that sends messages to a jms queue use jms for work distribution

FYI - the re-join issue is fixed - the pull request has been submitted and is awaiting merging:
