JBoss 7.1.1- Server does not start if the installation path contains non-English characters [UTF-8 characters]

Hi,

I am trying to run JBoss-7.1.1 in an Italian machine. My JBOSS_HOME is "C:\Program Files\Quantità\jboss-as-7.1.1.Final" where the path contains a folder with accented character.

When I start the server [using standalone.bat], I get the following error:

Calling "C:\Program Files\Quantità\jboss-as-7.1.1.Final\bin\standalone.conf.bat"

Can not find the path specified.

WARNING JBOSS_HOME may be pointing to a different installation - unpredictable results may occur.

Could not locate "C:\Program Files\QuantitÓ\jboss-as-7.1.1.Final\jboss-modules.jar".

Please check that you are in the bin directory when running this script.

Note: Quantità has been changed to QuantitÓ in the error by JBoss.

How to fix this issue? Please help...

What does the startup env dump from boot.log look like?

boot.log has not generated.

Try moving the AS to a place with no special characters and re-run in order to get the boot.log

Also, try running it without setting the JBOSS_HOME at all.

PFA, boot logs of Italian machine. Server starts in both the cases you mentioned.

But it does not in Japanese machine with "期間に印刷され" [UTF-8 characters] as one of the folders in the path. I am not able to get the boot log in this case.

It throws the same errors as I mentioned earlier.

Any idea why it could be?

This looks like a bug. Am I wrong here?

I would say so, I changed a path element from "AS" to "ASä" and it failed to start. I debugged standalone.xml and got

Can you change that:

"%JAVA%" -client -version 2>&1 | findstr /I /C:"Client VM" > nul

to

"%JAVA%" -client -version 2>&1 | findstr /I /C:"Client VM"

and see what it throws up?

Nothing happens

But now I noticed that the AS fails to start even with no special chars! ;-)

Must have done something else (JVM upgrade or something). I usually start my AS from Eclipse so I hadn't noticed this.

Got it booting. With a "ä" in the path. Also tried "Quantità" and it worked.

It worked for me with some accented characters, but it fails with Japanese characters. Can you please try with some Japanese UTF8 characters in installation path?

I get a

Error: Unable to access jarfile C:\Java\???????\jboss-7.1.1\jboss-modules.jar

with the japanses chars in your example

Japanese charachers won't work by default unless you have your windows locale settings set to japanese.

otherwise CMD/explorer won't be able to work with folder like that.

but if you do that, it works.

I tried it...It worked today but yesterday it didn't.

Checked in Windows OS[Ja] with no JBOSS_HOME set as envt variable.  Hopefully it will work even with Chinese/Korean characters.
