Here are a few observations using BoxGrinder and VMWare.
If you are building in the HGFS (VMWare shared filesystem) mounted filesystem, it will fail with a cryptic error. I had to copy the files from my HGFS filesystem to the local disk and run BoxGrinder.
The current Boxgrinder-meta VM is booting an older kernel version. When you try to install the VMWare Tools on it, it will fail because of missing kernel headers. You need to change Grub to boot the newer Linux kernel, yum install kernel-dev, then run the VMWare tools install.
