Searching process instances based on business data

I would like to search all the processes started for a particular customer. Whats the best way to do it?

Is there a means in JBPM to expose this business data, so that the data can be extracted from an active process via the REST API so that it can be used in a custom user interface?

This feature would allow us to do a search like this  -- all pending process for a given customer id
