    Confusion about EAP 6.0.1 licensing

    darrellburgan

Hey everyone, sorry if this is a dumb question but I need an unequivocal answer so I know what to tell my management.

We are running JBoss AS 7.1.1 in production right now, and are planning to switch to EAP 6.0.1 very soon. We spoke with Red Hat sales about it and got an understanding of how the licensing model works. I thought I had it figured out what we were going to purchase.

But then yesterday I saw this:

      http://planet.jboss.org/post/eap_binaries_available_for_all_developers

Based on reading this, here is my understanding:

      • We will still want to proceed with purchasing licenses for the instances of EAP 6.0.1 that we will run in production. We want support and the latest bug fixes.
      • We do not, however, need to purchase licenses for the instances of EAP that we use in our development environments, nor in our internal testing environments.
      • And, it is fine to run the identical EAP 6.0.1 binaries we run in production in our development and internal testing environments.

Can someone authoritative from Red Hat please confirm my understanding? Do we give up some kind of support if we are not licensing the copies of EAP 6.0.1 that our developers use?

      Thanks,

      Darrell Burgan

          Hi Darrell,

the answer is simple and yet not.

In general you can have a 'developer' subsription which mean you have access to the 'portal' to download the EAP bits and use the knowledge base.

If you run a productive instance and want support for this there are different levels depend on the number of instances and cores you run on and the scope of service i.e. 24/7/365 to calculate the fee.

You might use the same bits for development without extra fee.

The article you read talk about the EAP6.1.Alpha version which is available and can be downloaded as preview for test .... But there is no support for this, also if you have a valid subscription there is still no support for the Alpha bits!

The Final EAP version will continue with the 'normal' subscription model.

But the final answer still depends on the contract and I think your assumptions are still correct. If you are still unsure you might ask your sales representitive.

Okay thanks. One further question: does this mean that the community and EAP versions of JBoss are going to start going different directions?

Not truly different "directions", no. To me that would mean the two codebases always grow farther and farther apart. The codebases will have differences of course, but the differences sometimes will be growing and sometimes will be shrinking. For example, a lot of work in community AS right now is focused on implementing EE 7, which is not something that I expect to see in EAP 6. So the codebases will diverge. But at some point in the future work will begin on productizing a community AS major version that supports EE 7, at which time the differences will shrink.

Makes sense - thanks for the information.
