AS 7 in domain mode on windows xp won't start

Hi,

I try to start JBoss EAP 6.0.1.GA (AS 7.1.3.Final-redhat-4) in domain mode on a 32-Bit Windows XP SP 3 system. JDK is jdk1.7.0_17. Windows-Firewall is off, virus-scanner is off. system32\drivers\etc\hosts contains one line: 127.0.0.1 localhost.

Console tells me, that the server is listening on 127.0.0.1:9999 (JBAS017100) but nothing happens. I can't access localhost:8080 nor localhost:9990.

I append the output of jstack to this posting. Starting server via standalone.bat works.

The attached file ports.jpg shows two java-process started pid 5520 and pid 5752. I can connect to pid 5752 via jconsole (no deadlock detected by jconsole), i can't connect to pid 5520 via jconsole.

Any idea, where to start debugging?

there looks like jvm is trying to getLocalHost from underlaying OS and it waits there.

Don't know what would cause that to happen...

I any case can you reproduce this on EAP 6.1 alpha1 we just released? http://www.jboss.org/jbossas/downloads/

there ware some changes in code that handles domain mode.

yes, I can reproduce with JBoss EAP 6.1.0.Alpha1 (AS 7.2.0.Alpha1-redhat-4).

I've attached two jstack-files to this posting.

pid2040 is the process listening on port 9999 and pid2228 is the other one.

it hangs in same method, in call to getLocalHost().

Can you try with JDK6, given that JDK7 is not officaly supported on windows xp.

I've checked with jdk1.6.0_29. Same behaviour.

I've attached jstack of pid 5348 which is the one not listening on port 9999. (The host controller?)

I can't connect with jstack to the process listening on port 9999. jstack just hangs.

It looks like problem is in native code not in java/jboss code at all.

method getLocalHost() is implemented native by jvm and just calls OS functions...

take a look at method: Java_java_net_Inet4AddressImpl_getLocalHostName

it just calls "gethostname" function in windows sdk

i would recommend reinstaling windows or maybe upgrading to something more modern

Can you show an ipconfig /all ? It's probably something with your network configuration...

One thing that comes to mind if you have any vmware/virtualpc/virtualbox software installed and they have installed virtual adapters or something that could interfere (if you have any, try disabling them). What does ping localhost show?

I have vmware on the machine but I guess I can skip that. A colleague checked on his (similar) machine and had the same issue with domain.bat. He has no virtualization-solution installed. So, maybe it's something special in our LAN...

I have just tried in clean instalation of windows xp sp3 with all updates installed in my vmware

and it starts just fine for me...

there was similar problem reported while back https://community.jboss.org/message/777082#777082

which i also could not reproduce...
