    Which EAP?

    howardl815

      Hi,

We are looking to move away from WebLogic and go with JBoss. I see JBoss EAP 6.1 Beta is available for download. How "BETA" is this? We would like to use it in production environment, and prefer something that's more production ready. Thank you very much.

IN addition to Nicklas and the faq, with Beta you will have fixes and improvements on top of the Alpha bits, so I think you can use it as community versions are used before (also in production).

If you need to have a professional support, quick fixes if there is no new version and a longer lifetime you can decide to buy a subscription.

With that you will have access to the final EAP download, patches after the Beta phase, a knowlegde base, you can ask the support if you have questions or problems and several other ....

I think most people will understand what you mean, but to be clear: you'll have "access" to the final EAP download with or without subscription, but without a subscription the binary bits will be an evaluation. You can also build the "exact same" binary (minus red hat branding) yourself and use that in whatever way you want (JBoss EAP doesn't make the binary closed source, it remains open source). Naturally you won't have and kind of support with the latter option.

Is the removal of the red hat branding/trademarks also required if the binary you build yourself is only used internally and not publicly (re-)distributed?

If you download the EAP bits this is the 'branded' version based on the community.

As Henk said the EAP bits are still open source and you can use it (distribution is different).

So you can use a self builded one or the downloaded bits internally.

Sorry, i probably didn't phrase my question clear enough. By "used internally" i meant "used internally for production usage".

The terms & conditions (see excerpt below) you're accepting to download the EAP 6.1.0.Beta binaries explicitly prohibid production usage:

WARNING:  By participating in the Program and accepting these terms, you represent that you will be using the Red Hat Subscriptions(s) for development purposes only, and Red Hat is relying on your representation as a condition of our providing you access to the Subscription(s).  If you use the Red Hat Subscriptions for any other purposes, you are in violation of Red Hat's Enterprise Agreement set forth below and are required to pay the applicable subscription fees, in addition to any and all other remedies available to Red Hat under applicable law. Examples of such violations include, but are not limited to,

                        • using the services provided under the Program for a production installation,

                        • offering support services to third parties, or

                        • complementing or supplementing third party support services with services received under the Program.

The same terms & conditions show up while trying to download the source or maven repository for EAP 6.1.0.Beta on http://www.jboss.org/jbossas/downloads. So you probably can't use the source and maven repository from this page to build EAP yourself and use it in production.

Since other threads mentioned alternative download locations for the EAP source and the maven repository...

                      [1] ftp://ftp.redhat.com/redhat/jbeap/6.1.0/en/source/

                      [2] http://maven.repository.redhat.com/techpreview/eap6/6.1.0.Beta1/

...you can get them without the restrictions quoted above.

So my question is: Can i take the EAP 6.1.0.Beta sources and the maven repository from the locations [1] and [2], build an EAP binary from that and use it it internally for production usage without further modifications (like removing red hat branding/trademarks)?
