This sounds like a common use case, would you mind filing a feature request for this? eg, it would be nice to do:
<rich:collapsibleSubTableToggler id="toggler" for="sbtbl" event="rowclick />

You can do something like the following to make the toggler disappear without losing the functionality:
<h:panelGroup layout="block" style="display: none;"> <rich:collapsibleSubTableToggler id="toggler" for="sbtbl" /> </h:panelGroup>
