jBPM5 has exactly same way of being integrated as jbpm4. You need to include it's libraries and dependencies into an application, then confiugure data source and persistence if you need it. All jbpm code bases tests run in standalone mode so you can take a look there as well.
If you could share what in particular is so difficult to setup to run jBPM 5 I more than sure many community members will help you out.

The JUNIT path is something I could explore.
For jbpm 4.4 I learnt the standalone setup by looking at the buid file and what it does.
I believe jbpm 5 documentation could have a section that deals with just a JBPM database set up and jbpm core libraries being used as a standalone java program.
It really helps a lot to a new beginner such as myself and allows more adaptability. Just my 2 cents.
