But if you have problems with 20MB disc space you might run into other problems as JBoss might create other files, i.e. log or tmp files for deployments, which might use more disc space

unless you have enormous amount of modules this should not be the 200mb size increase issue you are seeing.
that .index files are there to speed up classloading....
