But it will require persistence to store the state of the tasks, if not you will loose it, and if the server restart you will end up in strange situations. Take a look at the docs for the RuntimeManager in jBPM 6, to see how it is all automatically configured for you.

I have tried using a persistent taskservice with some challenges iam going through... most of them being around org.hibernate.exception.DataException: could not update: [org.jbpm.persistence.processinstance.ProcessInstanceInfo#11]
What could be the problem

You will need to elaborate more and show the complete stack trace of the error for us to be able to help. You also need to specify your configurations and which version of jBPM are you using.
