It looks like the ESB 4.2.0 is missing a bit of configuration to point to the shell.init.script. Could you add the following line to your etc/system.properties file to see if that fixes the issue for you?
karaf.shell.init.script=${karaf.home}/etc/shell.init.script

For now, manually adding the setting to the system.properties file seems to fix it on my machine. The same fix has been added to Apache ServiceMix in https://issues.apache.org/activemq/browse/SMX4-485, so the next release should have the correct settings out-of-the-box again.
