unfortunately this is not supported out of the box but you can create your own work item definition and handler that will actually do that.

That worked for me... cheers Maciej. But it really looks like a tedious process just to set up and send an email.
One quick question though.... it looks as though when I send from a mail server that uses SSL I get connection timeout errors but in my dev environment where I am not using SSL I can send emails OK. Is there a setting I can tweek to get SSL working properly? or where I can increase the timeout?

There is no need to change the standalone.xml file.
just change your workitemhandler to:
"Email": new org.jbpm.process.workitem.email.EmailWorkItemHandler("smtp.gmail.com","587","YOUR USER NAME@gmail.com","YOUR PASS","true")
That will work properly.

I am on 6.2.0 Final and I am using new org.jbpm.process.workitem.email.EmailWorkItemHandler("smtp.DOMAIN.com","25","MYUSERNAME","YOUR PASS") without the last parameter. I've got 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful issue . The account is actually working when I connected from outlook. Wonder if there is any other settings I can add into jboss level to get this working...
