I tried to help you but failed to understand what you were trying to achieve since it was not explained why you are trying to define a custom filter, or what kind of filter you are trying to add.

Also I explained that the project is no longer under active development, so the contributors moved on now.

Sorry - I didn't know I needed to explain fully by need for defining a custom filter.  I'm porting an existing portal codebase to this new platform and the exisiting codebase has a number of filters defined.  I didn't want to change the portal.war so I was just trying to get some of the documented "supported" features of a portal extension working. And I thought it was obvious what kind of filter I'm trying to add...the only one in the example extension's source code....the SampleFilter which is an HttpFilter implementation.

Since there was no useful help from this forum, I decided to move on and solve my problem another way.  I guess the GateIn/JBoss portal project is dead
