End of life for Wildfly 8.x.x ?

    andylongstaffe

      Hi,

Can you tell me what the end of life expectancy is for Wildfly 8 please?

I appreciate that Wildfly is a community project and i understand the relationship between itself and JBoss EAP but most community projects have a 'best-endeavours type' support policy which explains which versions will be updated (and for how long) if for example security issues occur.

      Thanks in advance.

There is no further development or bug fixing for old releases.

If WildFly 9 is released there will be no further update for WildFly 8, all features and fixes will go into upstream.

If you are not able to upgrade and need a fix for a known bug you might use the WF8 branch and cherry pick the fix.

If you found an issue you can contribute and create a JIRA and a pull request with the fix

Thanks for the reply. The bit that doesn't quite add up for me is that 8.2.1 and 9.0.1 were released at the same time in July last year which implies to me both major versions are still 'active'.

Coincidentally, Wildfly 10 has now been released which may mean further Wildfly 8 updates are less likely, and according to the above i wouldn't expect any more updates to Wildfly 9 but i suspect this is not the case.

This information would help me plan future upgrades for our production system and give some assurance to seniors re the support lifecycle of the products we use (which i appreciate is not guaranteed in other open source projects but at least there is a understanding of their intention).

Yes but that was more because of this both releases ware done to address security issue

also both releases ware done as 9.0.0.Final was released not long before, so it was reasonable to say that most users didn't upgrade yet so patch for 8.2.x was done as well.

But think of that kind of releases more of exception than a rule, we will cut new micro releases if major security flaw is found and fixed but that is pretty much only reason why we would do micro new release for older majors.

As of today 10 is latest major and 9 & 8 are considered legacy, that might or might not receive any new releases.

If your environment requires long lifecycle with new updates/patches/releases maybe you should look into EAP releases which provide just that.
