How to detect stale Connections ?

Hi all !
I'd like to know if it's possible to detect when a Connection has gone stale.
I have tried with <check-valid-connection-sql> tag but this one seems to check a valid Sql only when the connection it's created.
I'd need to check periodically the status of DB.
P.s. I'm using JBoss 5.0 GA

What do you mean by a "stale" connection?

Also, check-valid-connection-sql is used each time the app asks for a connection, whether the connection was just now created or was created earlier and came from the connection pool.

Hi peter, thanks for your reply.
I was meaning, is there a way to trigger an Action when a connection is not reachable (f.e. oracle listener just shut down) ?
from what I can understand, I can discover a "broken" connection only polling the DB with a running thread.....maybe is there something built-in which does this ?

Polling the DB with a separate thread is the only way I know of detecting this.
