    AS7.1 HornetQ clustering,  Unable to validate user: HORNETQ.CLUSTER.ADMIN.USER

    Ed Keen Newbie

      Distribution:  AS 7.1.0.Final

      I am trying to get HornetQ clustered, but my organization does not permit UDP, so I have to use static IP addresses.  Here is how I have configured my standalone.xml:

      standalone.xml

      <subsystem xmlns="urn:jboss:domain:messaging:1.1">

        <hornetq-server>

           <clustered>true</clustered>

          ......

           <connectors>

             <connector name="server1-connector">

               <factory-class>org.hornetq.core.remoting.impl.netty.NettyConnectorFactory</factory-class>

               <param key="host" value="other.server.ip.address.here"/>

               <param key="port" value="5445"/>

            </connector>

          </connectors>

          ......

          <cluster-connections>

            <cluster-connection name="default-cluster-connection">

              <address>#</address>

              <connector-ref>netty</connector-ref>

              <retry-interval>500</retry-interval>

              <use-duplicate-detection>true</use-duplicate-detection>

              <forward-when-no-consumers>true</forward-when-no-consumers>

              <max-hops>2</max-hops>

              <static-connectors>

                <connector-ref>server1-connector</connector-ref>

              </static-connectors>

            </cluster-connection>

          </cluster-connections>

      </subsystem>

      When I start the first server in the cluster, I do not see any errors.  However, when I start the 2nd server, both server log files start filling up with this error over & over.  Am I missing provisioning a user somewhere?

          Have you changed the cluster password from the default?  You can do this using XML like this in <hornetq-server>:

            <cluster-password>newClusterPassword</cluster-password>

          The authentication layer will automatically reject any user with the default credentials.  To do otherwise would be a security hole.

            What file is this <cluster-password> tag in?

            grepping standalone-full-ha.xml for cluster-password returns nothing.

            • 4. Re: AS7.1 HornetQ clustering,  Unable to validate user: HORNETQ.CLUSTER.ADMIN.USER
              Justin Bertram Master

              The <cluster-password> tag isn't present by default (and hence the default value in the code is used).  As I indicated in my previous comment you can put the <cluster-password> in the <hornetq-server> section of the configuration file.

                Hi I'm running with stock Jboss as7.1.x  latest daily build as of yesterday (also tried 7.1.1-Final) and I'm trying to get clustering work as described in the following article (permalink to my comment).

                https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/AS71/AS7+Cluster+Howto?focusedCommentId=32473098#comment-32473098

                I am using stock settings and got everything else working (mod_cluster, distributed deployments) except for session replication. Adding the <cluster-password> or <cluster-user> and <cluster-password> as you suggested above did not work for me.

                <subsystem xmlns="urn:jboss:domain:messaging:1.2">

                                <hornetq-server>

                                    <cluster-user>admin</cluster-user>

                                    <cluster-password>admin1</cluster-password>

                When server-three starts up I get the following error as have been reported by a number of users:

                [Server:server-three] 00:33:37,845 ERROR [org.hornetq.core.protocol.core.impl.HornetQPacketHandler] (Old I/O server worker (parentId: 1750434101, [id: 0x68558135, /192.168.150.100:5695])) Failed to create session : HornetQException[errorCode=105 message=Unable to validate user: HORNETQ.CLUSTER.ADMIN.USER]

                Any other ideas?

                Thanks

                  Can you attach the full server.log which contains this exception?

                  Also, are there any other JBoss AS7 instances or standalone HornetQ instances on your network which might be trying to cluster with this node?  Sometimes people aren't aware of other servers on the network using the same multicast address/port as them.

                    Kirk Rasmussen Newbie

                    Hi Justin,

                    I have two nodes running on VMWare Workstation 7 using NAT: 192.168.150.100 (master) and 192.168.150.200 (slave). At this time I'm just interested in session replication working as I'm doing a demo to decision makers about moving our platform from IBM WAS 6.1 to JBoss 6 EAP. This is my only show stopper. I'm gone through the AS7 Cluster Howto setup 3 times now so I'm pretty sure I'm done everything suggested so far.

                    I'm not a system administrator and completely new to JBoss so excuse me if I get some terminology incorrect. If it were a multicast problem would managed deployments in the domain still work (they do)? Or does it use a different mechanism?

                    Here's how I start the master and slave nodes:

                    sudo -u jboss bin/domain.sh  -b 192.168.150.100 -bmanagement 192.168.150.100

                    sudo -u jboss bin/domain.sh  -b 192.168.150.200 -bmanagement 192.168.150.200 -Djboss.domain.master.address=192.168.150.100 -Djboss.domain.master.port=9999

                    I don't see how to attach a log file on the forum here (permission thing maybe???) so here's the log from the master node server-three. I killed the server right after it started throwing exceptions.

                    Thanks for your help!

                      Justin Bertram Master

                      Based on the stack-trace, it appears to me that this server is receiving a request from a remote server which is trying to use the default clustering credentials (which are rejected).  This means that another server out there on the network is using the wrong cluster credentials when trying to connect to this node.  Can you confirm that both nodes which you know about are using non-default cluster credentials?

                      My reference to mutlicast wasn't regarding a problem per se.  I was just trying to point out that sometimes people see unknown members trying to join their cluster because they happen to be using the same multicast address/port.  This may be happening here.

                        I set both master and slave nodes to use:

                        {code:xml}

                        <subsystem xmlns="urn:jboss:domain:messaging:1.2">

                                        <hornetq-server>

                                            <cluster-user>admin</cluster-user>

                                            <cluster-password>admin1</cluster-password>

                        {code}

                        This is running within a NATed VMware instance on my laptop. I've run it off the network so there's no way anyone else is getting in. Nobody else in the organization is using JBoss either.

                        It wasn't clear if this had to be an actual jboss user but I've tried adding one using (bin/add-user.sh) but it didn't make any difference. I even created a managed user named 'HORNETQ.CLUSTER.ADMIN.USER'  but still no good.

                        Is there any other debugging levels that might help isolate the problem further?

                          I also don't start getting these messages until my slave node starts up (specially server-three-slave)

                            Can you provide me steps to reproduce this on my local machine - preferrably without VMware?

                              Have you solved your problem? I'm facing exactly the same problem with JBoss 7.1.0 but standalone mode. As soon as I start a second server I get the error on both instances. I set the password to something different than the default one.

                              For some reasons its suddenly working ^^
