Recent Blog Post Concerning Teiid 8.4 and JBoss EAP 6.1

    scottmcentee

You mentioned in your recent blog post that Teiid 8.4 is going to be based on JBoss EAP 6.1.  Will all future versions of Teiid be based on EAP?  Or is this an interim decision until such time as JBoss AS 8 is released GA?

Also, do you forsee any compatibility problems with using Teiid 8.4+ with JBoss 7.1.1.  Requiring JBoss EAP raises complications for us.

          Scott,

Yes, you are correct. The current plan is all future Teiid 8.x versions going to be based on JBoss EAP versions, as there is not going to be any community releases in JBoss AS 7.x series. When JBoss AS 8, or whatever it will be called in future gets released in community, then we will start supporting that version with Teiid 9.x releases.

Yes, JBoss AS 7.1.1 has many bugs we have working with. In some places we provided patches in Teiid code, some we can not, this can not continue if we want to make progress with features we looking forward to implement. JBoss EAP, is available in the community for developers  to use. How do you see adoption of the EAP raise concerns? Please explain as this is very important subject for Teiid community as well as whole JBoss community of projects that are built on JBoss AS. We will try to solve any misplaced concerns you may have.

          Thanks

I'm not sure how this will play out exactly.  Some form of a community release of EAP will be available - http://www.jboss.org/jbossas/downloads/  The goal will still be to have a leading Teiid release that is compatible with some final version that is availble to the community.  At some points in our release cycles we may of course target a lagging EAP/AS version rather than immediately starting a next major iteration.

We are an ISV looking to provide an appliance that contains Teiid and JBoss AS which we can deliver directly to our clients.  This appliance will be customized with content specific for the usage we intend.  As JBoss AS is open source, we don't have to negotiate a redistribution agreement with RH.  We just need to adhere to JBoss AS licensing rules.  If we have to redistribute EAP to utilize Teiid, this will cause us to rethink our plans as it is likely to bring a reanalysis of ROI for the tool we are planning to provide.

                Scott,

Here is much better explanation of situation by Randall on same issue https://community.jboss.org/message/803288#803288, IMO Teiid position is no different than Modeshape in this regard.

Thank you for the link to this other post.  That clarifies the situation for me.
