No, that is optional.

Unquoted names must begin with @ # or a letter and only contain letters, digits, or _. Letters may be any upper or lower case ascii letter or any unicode character in the range 0153-fffd. See the regex pattern for letter on BNF for SQL Grammar | Teiid Documentation
> Any commonly known gotcha's ?
Depending upon the client you can use the utf character directly or Teiid supports the escape syntax \uXXXX
