if you used all defaults then you created a War project; @Stateful is only sensible in context of an Ear project.
Otherwise it all sounds like something better asked about in the seam user forum.

@Max, are you saying that instead of creating a Seam Web Project, we need to create a 'J2EE/Enterprise Appication Project' using the wizard?

no - i'm saying that on the last page of the seam wizard are two options; war and ear.
It is by default war (which uses pojo's) and that if you want to use Session Beans need to select Ear.
