7. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
nickboldt Sep 24, 2009 12:38 PM (in response to rdowney)@mareshkau did you mean a JIRA? You linked to this post instead.
@mstille did you install in on top of 2.0, or in a new location? Should be a new location.
What JDK are you using? 32- or 64-bit? Should be JDK6 if you want to use EAP5, JDK5+ otherwise. Also, must be the same # of bits as the distro (32-bit).
---
Unfortunately there's no 64-bit JBDS 2.1 installer, but the bits in JBoss Tools are 99% the same. (As Fedora is to RHEL, so is JBoss Tools to JBDS.)
If you want JBDS for a 64-bit JVM you'll have to assemble it yourself from pieces: Eclipse 3.4.2 Galileo JEE bundle (SR2), JBoss Tools 3.0.2.
https://www.jboss.org/tools/download/stable/3_0_GA.html
It's easy, don't worry. If you need assistance, read this:
https://www.jboss.org/tools/download/update.html#fromsite
--
Also, have you tried launching from the Eclipse.app instead of the JBDS.app icon? I vaguely recall there was some bug about an incorrect jar reference in the JBDS app but not the Eclipse one - though I thought that was fixed. (This was on Leopard, not Snow Leopard, so YMMV.) -
8. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
nickboldt Sep 24, 2009 12:44 PM (in response to rdowney)Correction. There is no 64-bit Eclipse 3.4.2 for Mac OSX.
http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.4.2-200902111700/macPlatform.php#EclipseSDK
The officially supported Mac platform for 3.4.2 is:
Apple Mac OS X 10.5, Universal, Carbon running:
Apple Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5, service release 4
If you want JBDS for 64-bit, you'll have to use JBoss Tools 3.1M3 (on Eclipse 3.5):
http://friends.eclipse.org/downloads/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.5-200906111540/macPlatform.php#EclipseSDK
Eclipse 3.5 is supported on Mac/Cocoa/x86_64, with a suitable 64-bit JDK. However, Snow Leopard came out AFTER Eclipse 3.5, so once again, YMMV. -
9. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
rdowney Sep 24, 2009 1:33 PM (in response to rdowney)I've tried firing up the eclipse icon , get the same error.
I installed to a fresh location ie. didn't install over 2.0.
Good point about the 64-bit java , I went for Java 6 and that is 64-bit by default at OS X 10.6.
I have changed the Java default to 32-bit in /Applications/Utility/Java Preferences.app , so it now reports mixed mode when you do a Java -version , reinstalled 2.1 but it still has the same error when you try to run it , but gets more and different errors in the install log.
I'll try installing an old 32-bit Java 5 off the Leopard disk and see if that works.
A 64-bit version would be great as I would imagine most OS X developers will be on Snow leopard very soon and it will hopefully speed eclipse up a bit as it is slow under carbon. -
10. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
nickboldt Sep 25, 2009 2:34 AM (in response to rdowney)Turns out the H166 build is hosed. It was an incomplete build, missing a few plugins due to a script glitch (garbage in, garbage out).
I've got a new one grinding away now - should be done in about 4hrs, followed by testing, publishing, etc.
Please be patient, and if I didn't say it before, thanks for reporting this issue!
If you have any other information to report, here's the JIRA for this issue:
https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/JBDS-870
Hopefully we can get an early access release of JBDS 3.0 out there for the OSX10.6 folks so they can take advantage of the new Eclipse 3.5 for 64-bit OSX. Keep bugging your customer support / sales people - they need to know there's a demand for it! :) -
11. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
maxandersen Sep 25, 2009 2:53 AM (in response to rdowney)rdowney, as Nick said thanks for reporting it.
This set of binaries were not supposed to be pushed out yet, so sorry for the disturbance.
We'll get it removed on the CSP and upload the real one ASAP.
Note: we are with this release also bringing out an updatesite hence you don't even have to download the install. Stay tuned for instructions ;) -
12. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
rdowney Sep 25, 2009 3:35 AM (in response to rdowney)Max & Nick ,no problem its a pleasure to help, JDS is my favourite eclipse bundle by far and I mention it to all my customers! If you need any assistanc e with early betas of the 10.6 just let me know. Thanks

13. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
nickboldt Sep 28, 2009 3:40 PM (in response to rdowney)Look for the H168 build on CSP soon. It's been tested, has passed, and is much happier than the incomplete H166 that went up before. Apologies again for the snafu, and thanks (again) for reporting the problem!

As to a Cocoa 64-bit JDK 6 version for Snow Leopard / 10.6... we'd love to have early testers!
I don't know if there are plans as yet to fully (read: enterprise-level) support 10.6 w/ JDK 6 and 64-bit Cocoa Eclipse. The major reason for this is that Eclipse 3.5 itself does not support 10.6 or even 10.5 on JDK 6... yet.
http://www.eclipse.org/projects/project-plan.php?planurl=http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/eclipse_project_plan_3_5.xml#target_environments
Still, there's an increasing population of 10.6 people, so while you may not be able to get enterprise support, there may very well be community support here for such a use case / scenario. (I'm too far down the food chain to be able to commit support.) -
14. Re: Can't start 2.1 under OS X Snow Leopard
rdowney Sep 28, 2009 4:22 PM (in response to rdowney)Thanks Nick, I'm downloading H168 now and looking to giving it a try tomorrow.
As regards the 64 bit and Cocoa , I'll have to try the plugins and do a bit of tinkering , in my optimism I had put my faith in Java's write once , run anywhere , forgetting of course about SWT etc.!
No rush for enterprise level support yet.
By the way IBM people I know are starting to use Mac's much more so that might start to filter through as some pressure on Rational to support OS X and perhaps feed into more investment in OS X eclipse from that side too.
