A potential GSoC gig for Arquillian

I believe that Arquillian fits well with the needs of Cosmin Martinconi's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) project, mentored by Jakob Korherr.

Automated webapp tests for MyFaces core and extensions (GSoC entry | official proposal)

The project is calling for tests which can run against the real classes and provide complete integration testing, the very philosophy of the Arquillian project.

We'd certainly welcome Cosmin and Jakob to the Arquillian project and look forward to working with them to enhance Arquillian where necessary to achieve their goal. Their project represents a very common need and could serve as a real world use case out in the open that developers can use as a model when setting up their own automated testing strategy.

You can see from the initial proposal that the API they have drafted looks very similar to Arquillian and in some cases suggests open feature requests in Arquillian (such as @Dependency).

I would much rather put our heads together than duplicate each other's work. Given that there are no barriers to working together (given that Arquillian is Apache-licensed), I really hope that we can make this work.

I anticipate that this project will also help move the Arquillian + JSFUnit integration along, which is an integral part of our humble testing initiative anyway.

This is really interesting!

As far as I can see, all of their APIs could be handled via the Arquillian SPIs if they wanted to keep them.

To simplify the test runs for the MyFaces Core tests they could create a MyFaces + Jetty Deployable container impl.. Should be doable in a few min..

JSFUnit integration has been committed. But as usual it comes with its set of odd bugs:

• The user has to add the faces-config.xml fil to his WebArchive to work around this bug

• A special JSFUnit patch is needed to make it work for more then one test pr server restart

Michael Schuetz is psyched about this one. He's going to start testing it as soon as he can.

Cosmin and I believe so too! However a colleague told me that there could be some resulting political issues between JBoss and Apache (e.g. regarding JSFUnit), but I don't think (or frankly I hope so for the sake of free software) that this will not be the case. But at least the license fits.

Furthermore Cosmin wrote a mail to the MyFaces dev list about using Arquillian for the GSoC project and no one really objected, after we told them that it is ASL licensed.

I would really like to use Arquillian and to help improve it to fit our needs best. Furthermore JSF developers will love it, I guess! In addition, I agree with Dan that putting our heads together will make each project better - and more future safe!

As you know, we are currently working on the API draft and the first reactions have been very positive - if you would like to add your ideas about the API, feel free to post to the MyFaces wiki page.

OK, started with testing locally.

@Aslak: Got the same problems with running tests multiple times.

JSFUnitArchiveAppender implementation is really cool. What I want to do next is to extend my simple test project. Lot's of thinks I want to play with.

Excited, if Appender will fit for all usecases. Patching JSFUnit would be pretty interesting either.

Unfortunately, I do not work full time on that - so hope to get back to that this evening

BTW: What do you think about that:

Using http://code.google.com/p/arquillian/ as integration platform with real example projects. I could provide an extended JSFunit sample code for testing heavily. Hm, just thoughts..
