akazakov Sep 16, 2010 8:11 AM (in response to atijms)Could you show your eclipse.ini?

2. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
atijms Sep 16, 2010 8:38 AM (in response to akazakov)Sure it's:
eclipse.ini:
-startup plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.201.R35x_v20090715.jar --launcher.library plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_64_1.0.200.v20090519 -product org.eclipse.epp.package.jee.product -showsplash org.eclipse.platform --launcher.XXMaxPermSize 256m -vmargs -Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.6 -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -Xms128m -Xmx512m
eclipse.sh: (used to start Eclipse)
#!/bin/sh export PATH=/opt/jdk1.6.0_18/bin/:$PATH export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 /home/some.user/eclipse35/eclipse/eclipse -clean
A few things were being tried, like setting requiredJavaVersion to 1.5 and setting MaxPermSize to 256m.

3. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
akazakov Sep 16, 2010 10:12 AM (in response to atijms)For big projects -Xmx512m maybe not enough. Try -Xmx1024M or even more. Or you can try to disable Windows/Preferences/Validation/JBoss KB Project Validator. Does it help?

4. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
atijms Sep 16, 2010 10:21 AM (in response to akazakov)Hmmm, I'm working on the same project at a different location using a much smaller computer (C1D, 1.5GB memory) and at that system I too have -Xmx512M. There are no real problems there (yes, it's slow and all, but the JBoss editor doesn't really make it slower).
I'm pretty sure that the validation was disabled as well, but I'll double check whether it was that specific validator.

5. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
atijms Sep 16, 2010 10:52 AM (in response to atijms)I do have to add btw that this other computer is 32 bits, so it might indeed be that 512M is simply not enough memory. I'll try to convince this other developer to increase the memory settings and report back.

We have increased the heap memory to -Xmx2048M and atleast the startup time and subsequent normal usage of Eclipse is fast again.
However, refactoring a simple method name in the web module remains incredibly slow. It takes a very long time in the "checking pre-conditions" stage. Refactoring a method name in the EJB module of the same EAR application however is really fast. As soon as JBoss tools Richfaces is uninstalled, this refactoring operating is at its normal speed again.
The problem seems to be that the JBoss tools Richfaces plugin causes the refactor operating to scan JSP files, which for some reason is really slow. As soon as I delete all JSP files from the web module, the refactoring is fast again.

7. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
maxandersen Sep 22, 2010 8:42 AM (in response to atijms)arjan, either your projects are gigantic or we got some serious bug that your project is somewhat triggering.
Is the project(s) available for us to look at somewhere or can we get an indication of its size/structure ?

8. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
mareshkau Sep 22, 2010 8:52 AM (in response to atijms)Also refactoring some resources can be a reason of calling validation process. The validation speed has been improved(see https://jira.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-7021), so could you try latest tools and check if you problem still reproducible?

9. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
akazakov Sep 22, 2010 8:53 AM (in response to atijms)Yes, it's good to know how many JSPs you have in the project. If there are a lot of JSPs with ELs then refactoring couild work very slow. But only first time (until you clean/re-build the project). See https://jira.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-7021 for datails.

The number of JSPs is exactly 333, in case it matters, the number of xhtml files is 107 and there are some old JSP .tag files; 14. Most of these files indeed you expression language as the majority of them use JSF.
Is there any figure relating to the size structure that you need to know in addition to this?
As mentioned it's an EAR project. It has 1 EJB module and 1 WEB module.

11. Re: JBoss tools RichFaces (aka the Visual Editor) exhausts heap?
akazakov Sep 22, 2010 8:24 PM (in response to atijms)I guess you are using JBT 3.1.*
We had much more problems with performance there than in JBT 3.2.*
We are still working on it (see https://jira.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-7021 ) but if you can try JBT 3.2.* (the latest nightly build) & Eclipse 3.6 that would be great.
