Error [MEM: MEM: Can't update or insert balancer: {4}] sending command CONFIG to proxy

I'm receiving the following error when starting up a server using jboss and mod_cluster.

[DefaultMCMPHandler] Error [MEM: MEM: Can't update or insert balancer: {4}] sending command CONFIG to proxy xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:###, configuration will be reset

I Googled it and found no results. Does anyone know why this would occur?

Editing to add:

Looking into the source code for mod_cluster, this appears to be thrown when the request is sent and the proxy server returns a return code other than a 200 and the command is NOT "SYNTAX". I'm just now sure why the proxy isn't returning a 200. I don't see any errors in the http error_log, access_log, or in my MCMP log.

the balancer in the CONFIG can't be created. You should set LogLevel debug in httpd.conf and look in the CONFIG message.

FIXED:

The solution to this problem was to increase the Maxhost, Maxnode, and Maxcontext declarations in the httpd.conf file. If these values are not set, they default to extremely low numbers.

I have run into the same error, can you show how you set the Maxhost, Maxnode, and Maxcontext declarations in the httpd.conf file.

I simply added the following lines:

Maxhost xxx

Maxnode xxx

Maxcontext xxx

Where xxx represents the maximum number of each item you'd like to have running at any given time.
