      Hi,

I am newbie working in JBoss AS. After new version of our application is deployed in Jboss it is taking long time during startup (around 8 minutes). Please find the JBOSS_HOME/server/default/log/server.log below which shows the time taken duration in

logs. Any kind of help is appreciated in advance.

          Tamal, welcome to the forums!

If you are starting new, then I would recommend that you use AS 7.1.0.CR1b instead since it's the latest available release.

          • 2. Re: JBoss AS 5.1 very slow in startup
            tamal24

            Hi Jaikiran,

Thanks a lot for your quick reply.  Actually in our project this version is being used for this purpose. Thats why I am also using this same version.

Actually when we deployed newer version of application the starting time has got increased. Earlier it is used to startup by 4 minutes or so.

Now it is taking around 8 minutes. And thats my problem.

            • 3. Re: JBoss AS 5.1 very slow in startup
              jaikiran

There are some known issues with the time required for deploying applications in AS 5.1.0. Some of them were fixed in AS 6.0.0 (and 6.1.0). That's one of the reasons why I suggested upgrading the version. If that's not possible then you'll have to narrow down on what's causing the delay.

For example, I see this in the log you posted:

              2012-02-01 13:03:10,498 INFO  [org.jboss.web.tomcat.service.deployers.TomcatDeployment] (main) deploy, ctxPath=/web-console

2012-02-01 13:10:40,514 INFO  [org.jboss.resource.deployers.RARDeployment] (main) Required license terms exist, view vfsfile:/opt/jboss51/server/default/deploy/hornetq-ra.rar/META-INF/ra.xml

Is there really a gap of 7 minutes there or did you trim some logs while posting?

              • 4. Re: JBoss AS 5.1 very slow in startup
                tamal24

No No Why do I on earth want to delete something ....when I am splitting hair why this is stuck for 7 minutes after this line.

The server stops there for 7 minutes .... and then the next lines comes in log.

                • 5. Re: JBoss AS 5.1 very slow in startup
                  jaikiran

Which specific Java version and operating system are you on?

Also try and get thread dumps http://community.jboss.org/wiki/ThreadDump at regular intervals when you see that 7 minute delay

                  • 6. Re: JBoss AS 5.1 very slow in startup
                    tamal24

Java version is 1.6.0_26 and OS is : SunOS version 5.10.

And I'm trying to collect threadDumps through console as the server is starting up so jmx-console way is not working.

There are other ways to collect that data without using jmx-console. The wiki I pointed you to has the details.

Yes I tried to collect modifying run.sh .

PFA the jboss.trace and modified run.sh and let me know if it is correct.

Hmm, which approach from the wiki I pointed you to, did you try? You don't need any run.sh changes and the logs you posted are not thread dumps.

                            I tried the

                            1. Signal the JVM to print out a StackTrace approach.

                            i.e https://community.jboss.org/wiki/StackTrace

There I was not getting the stack trace even after sending kill -3 <processid of jboss> .So according to the document I modified the run.sh to redirect the log to jboss.trace. But am not successful.

                            2. Generate a thread dump using the jmx-console   is not working because the jmx-console is not reday untill the server is up.And I need the stacktrace while the server is starting up.

Though I did not tried 3rd and 4th aproach.

I am sorry as this problem got resolved itself but I am sorry to make the reply late.

Jboss 5.1 was starting late because our application made use of HornetQ. And during startup Jboss was trying to connect to queue on one particular ip.

but as the queue was down permanently at that time so Jboss was also waiting to amke the connection and in the process it was not starting up.As the queue was managed by a seperate team, when they were able to make the queue up, at that time the the problem got resolved ti self.
