1. Re: Do you guys need Windows-bashing for gaining self assurance?
koen.aers Jul 24, 2012 10:41 AM (in response to geziefer)Hi Alexander,
At JBoss we try to support all the major platforms as good as possible. Forge is tested on Mac OS X, different Linux flavours and on the Windows releases starting with Windows XP. A lot of us also do development on Windows machines.
The "Windows. Really? Ok" message might be a bit nerdy but it is just a harmless joke and should be considered as such... ;-)
Cheers,
Koen

lincolnthree Jul 24, 2012 11:22 AM (in response to koen.aers)Hi Alexander,
I'm sorry we have not entirely lived up to your expectations in this regard. I understand that most IT departments are given pre-built machines and that the individual developers have little or no control over their environments. We think it's a silly joke, but I understand why you might feel more strongly about it. Thank you for your feedback, we'll consider this and decide what to do. If you would like to join the discussion, I will be starting a thread about this on our development list today. You can join at https://lists.jboss.org/mailman/listinfo/forge-dev
Looking forward to continuing the discussion,
~Lincoln

3. Re: Do you guys need Windows-bashing for gaining self assurance?
geziefer Jul 25, 2012 2:40 AM (in response to lincolnthree)Well, I don't want to be in a huff, I only regarded it as inappropriate for a serious project to mock about other operation systems.
But I appreciate your comments, so maybe I can give Forge another chance

lincolnthree Jul 25, 2012 9:52 AM (in response to geziefer)Well, in all reality it's probably a good thing that you are brought this up (though I did tone down your subject line a little bit hehe) I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way.

What do you think about some of the ideas raised in our discussion? I basically want to keep the character of this feature, but I certainly don't want to single out individuals or specific groups of individuals.

geziefer Jul 25, 2012 10:12 AM (in response to lincolnthree)I'm really impressed by the amount and response time of your discussion about the topic I raised here!
To give my opinion about it here, I don't see the need of discarding jokes completely, they are not per se unprofessional, I'd only advise to not make them (sound) offending. I fully agree to the fact that the Windows console is not good at all, so I personally liked Dan's idea with the "don't worry".

6. Re: What's with the Windows joke?
brieweb Sep 20, 2012 1:25 AM (in response to geziefer)Debian GNU/Linux is the OS of purists. The great thing is that Debian GNU/Linux runs flawlessly with ACPI, suspend, Gnome 2, etc on this Thinkpad T60 I picked up off ebay with no proprietary drivers. Debian keeps going and going and going. If you would want to boast using an OS that uses backslash as a file separator and forced upgrades, be my guest!

khooke Sep 26, 2012 2:13 PM (in response to lincolnthree)Given that your own JBoss Tools usage stats are showing that the lagest majority of your users are on Windows (yes, I was surprised too), I'd suggest you don't alienate your own users...

8. Re: What's with the Windows joke?
lincolnthree Sep 27, 2012 2:43 PM (in response to geziefer)Locking this topic. I don't think we need to keep re-hashing this one. Please continue discussions on a new thread if desired, but I don't think we need to keep digging up an already resolved OS-bashing debate on the forums. Also, if you'd like to continue discussions, I'd like to ask that a more objective subject line be used so we can stick to the facts.
Thanks all.
