JBPM 4.4 Vs. JBPM 5.4

Hi,

I have worked in JBPM 4.4 before but while working on JBPM 5.4, I need to draw parlance between the two versions to understand the architecture better

Here are some of my understandings:

JBPM 4.4	JBPM 5.4
Process Engine	Knowledge Builder
Repository Service	Knowledge Base
process Instance	Knowledge Session

Is this analogy correct?

not exactly, process engine is KnowledgeSession, KnowledgeBase can be seen as repository, and process instance is same, process instance that is managed be ksession.

I was of the opinion that creating knowledge builder (like creating process engine in jbpm 4) is an expensive step.

And hence should be created only once.

So what does Knowledge Builder do?

Did you check the docs? -> Chapter 5. Core Engine: API

The knowledge builder basically builds knowledge, in this case it compiles the business process definition into something that can be executed.

The knowledge base keeps all the compiled knowledge together as a repository

and the knowledge session will contain the process instances. Notice that you can have multiple knowledge sessions and kbases depending what are you trying to do and your requirements.
