Quickstart or other DDL examples using GoogleAPIs geocode service

I found an outdated thread about this topic but nothing new so I thought I'd throw the question here..

Can anyone point me to more updated information on modeling the maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode service in order to create a view that accepts an address as input and returns Lat Lon etc from the Google API service?

I know it requires a KEY to be obtained first but still I have to believe someone has done this more recently and can share..

I do not remember seeing this in forums. It looks like a straight http call, where first you need to get place id, then use that to get place details where geo co-ordinates are.
