Thanks for the comments guys. I took them into account and designed another version for the site, that can be seen at: http://statichtml-theute.rhcloud.com/cardosogabriel/gatein-client/new-space.html

The sidebar was redesigned to display spaces and sites as different categories. It's also possible to collapse/expand the categories, an user choice. I went this direction instead of the carousel because this solution gives more control to the user, allows to hide the other categories too and requires less visual elements than a carousel.

The buttons Add site/space and delete selected item were fixed at the bottom, to make the navigation area cleaner. The previous design were claiming too much attention to the sidebar, so I removed every unnecessary element, like the horizontal lines. Even the collapse buttons only appear when the mouse is over.

Considering that might be many sites / spaces, the content area was redesigned to occupy full height. Due to this new approach, the footer was fixed at the bottom.

About the group selection, we decided to offer a list view and an hierarchical view. It is also possible to make a search. That should cover the needs exposed by Peter.

On top of this, I worked on some HTML validation, cleaning some bootstrap elements that were not valid. Now we have valid HTML5 files
